Music Marketing: Finding Your Audience

Updated: Feb 10, 2023

Music marketing, in my opinion, is the most important thing you can master; well other than your latest song you just laid down in the studio. It is essential that you submerge yourself in this and learn as much as possible. Unless you have a savvy manager or partner that will be doing it for you, I suggest you get good at this; real good. This article will definitely give you some insight and set you on the right path!

I would first recommend, if you haven’t already, setting up your social media accounts. The ones I would focus on are facebook (make a music page separate from your personal profile), instagram, tik-tok, reverbnation, and soundcloud. Of course, there are others, but these are the best ones you should start with. Tik-Tok is a great platform you can get creative with, a lot of overnight successes have been made here as of late similar to YouTube it it's earlier years; you should get to know it very well. Make sure your @handle is the same across all platforms for ease of searchability. Make sure your photos and banners are high quality representing you, your brand, and what you love to do most; make music! CONTENT CONTENT CONTENT is what you should be posting on these different outlets.

Next, I would definitely create a website if you haven't already; we use Wix. Once you have it up and running link it with google analytics and install your Facebook pixel in the settings area of your website host. This will help analyze your traffic to see where visitors are coming from. Make sure to use your new website in a way where you can capture leads, email addresses, and phone numbers. Wix makes it easy to setup lead and pop-up capture forms. By using email marketing, you can stay top of mind when your audience is hungry for new music to listen to or local shows to go to. Definitely create an ads account in the business manager of your fan page on Facebook. This will allow you to run paid ads their platform which is essential nowadays. Plentiful organic traffic is nice but far and few in between. If you already have a highly engaged audience, continue to give that audience great consistent content with all your heart; make sure they know you are doing all this for them! Most artist’s do not have this luxury so definitely embrace it and don’t take it for granted. Back to Facebook ads, a majority of new online fans will come from Facebook and Instagram. I suggest going on YouTube to learn the basics like boosting posts and creating your first campaign inside your ad manager (I will post some links below). Once you get more advanced and comfortable with them, you can start creating lookalike audiences and re-targeting campaigns. Lookalike audiences will mirror an audience you have defined and find more people like that. You will need a certain amount of traffic before you can create an effective lookalike, but even with 100 emails collected or page views this will work. Re-targeting is displaying a different ad to a group of people who viewed your content the first time but didn’t take any action or make a purchase. On the second time around, you can offer them a discount or give away something for free like a t-shirt.

The more money you invest in ads, the more info and data you will collect. With all this collected data and practice, your future campaigns will become easier to run. It’s just like anything, the more time and effort you put into it, the better you will get at it. This is something definitely worth putting the time into so you can build up your following and find your flock of dream fans quicker!
